The American Civil Liberties Union has urged local law enforcement officials in Florida and Massachusetts to open investigations into how an FBI agent killed a man who was being interrogated in his Orlando apartment about the Boston Marathon bombing suspects.
In letters to the attorney general of Massachusetts and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the ACLU said the public had little faith in the FBI's ability to investigate itself. The letters cited a recent article by The New York Times, which said that from 1993 to 2011, the FBI deemed its agents' use of force justified in the 150 instances in which an FBI agent fatally shot or wounded someone. The Times based its findings on investigation reports obtained through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit.
"It seems unlikely that the FBI investigation will meaningfully inform Massachusetts residents about what happened," Carol Rose, the executive director of the ACLU of Massachusetts, said in a letter to Martha Coakley, the attorney general of Massachusetts..............

Journalistic courage in calling for FBI to clear air
Walker rightly points out that determination and diligence by the FBI need to be tempered with accountability and a certain degree of transparency in order for our system of justice to be effective and trustworthy, and for news reporting to be credible. He also points out what should be obvious to all of us — that findings in the trial of James “Whitey” Bulger indicate that the FBI is not immune to nefarious behavior and that an independent mechanism for accountability is desperately needed.
Media and government accounts of the Boston Marathon bombing and manhunt are riddled with black holes, speculation, contradictions, leaks, and half-truths that dangerously morph into evidence and facts in the mind of the general public.
The sober posture and commentary by Walker and Vennochi are not only refreshing. They should serve as a model for everyone concerned with getting to the bottom of how and why incidents like the Marathon bombing happen in the first place.
