Commonwealth Vs Eric Frein: Session in Court Shortened Today
MILFORD, PIKE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)- The trial of accused state trooper killer Eric Frein resumes this morning in Pike County. But the session will be cut short.
The second week of Frein's murder trial resumed earlier than normal and already several witnesses have testified.
One of the last witnesses was Scott Malkowski, a member of the U.S. Marshals Service, who spotted Frein, and eventually took him into custody after a 48-day manhunt.
Malkowski said he spotted Frein outside an abandoned airplane hanger in Monroe County and took him into custody without incident.
A little earlier, Mayor George Bivens took the stand, calling the search for Frein the proverbial "needle in a haystack." He said they were looking for one person who did not want to be found.
Bivens said at its high point, roughly 1,000 local, state, and federal officers were brought in to search for Frein on the ground and in the air. In all, the search was roughly 300-350 square miles.
The day started with State Trooper James Hitchcock, detailing a note found in the trash near a campsite in the woods they believe belonged to Frein. A three page note detailed the shooting. It started with:
"Friday, September 12th. Got a shot around 11 pm. Took it. He dropped and yelled. I was surprised at how quick."
The court will only be a morning session because Frein observes Passover, and the solumn holiday of Jewish faith begins at sundown.
