Group: 'Dead' zone of Sao Paulo river doubles in a year

SAO PAULO (AP) — The main river running through South America's biggest city has a "dead" stretch that's doubled in size over the past year to over 96 miles (155 kilometers) because of sewage pollution.

That's according to a report on the 680-mile (1,100-kilometer) Tiete River released this week by environmental group SOS Mata Atlantica.
The Tiete begins about 45 miles (75 kilometers) west of central Sao Paulo before dumping its waters inland.
Environmentalists say sewage pollution coupled with severe droughts in 2014 and this year are mostly to blame, along with a lack of cooperation between the mayors of cities along the state water company.
Sao Paulo's state government started a de-pollution project in 1993 with the goal of cleaning the vital river by 2020.
